  • Gilzarilal Nanda was born on 4 July 1898 in Sialkot (Present Pakistan).
  • Gulzarilal Nanda was a economist by profession and in 1921 he worked as Professor of Economics at National College in Bombay. He also worked as research scholar at Allahabad University.
  • He was honoured with India’s highest civilian award (Bharat Ratna) in 1997 for his contribution to government administration and society.
  • He lived a life of austerity and was totally indifferent to materialistic desires.

Political Life Facts about Gulzarilal Nanda

  • Gulzarilal Nanda served as secretary of Indian Labor welfare organisation and also worked as Chairman of Bombay Housing Housing Board. He had a great role in Indian National Trade Union Congress and later became its President.
  • He was elected to Parliament in General Elections of 1952  from Bombay and appointed as appointed as Minister for Planning, Irrigation and Power.
  • He served different portfolios under the Prime-ministership of Jawaharlal Nehru and served the important post of Home Minister under the regime of Lal Bahadur Shastri.
  • He worked twice as Acting Prime Minister for 13 days each first after death of Jawaharlal Nehru and second after death of Lal Bahadur Shastri.
