  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on 25 Dec 1924 in Gwalior. He joined RSS in 1939 and was arrested for 23 days along with his elder brother Prem during Quit India Movement.
  • He was born to middle class brahmin family and his faher was a schoolteacher was also a poet.
  • When he was a child his family shifted from Gwalior, MP to Bateshwar, UP.
  • He was a poet by profession.
  • Altal Bihari Vajpayee was the first Non congress Prime Minister who completed full term in office.

Political Life Facts about Atal Bihari Vajpayee

  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee along with Deendayal Upadhyay in 1951 , were elected to work for the newly formed Jan Sangh, an association of RSS. He along with Shyama Prasad Mukherjee fasted unto death in 1954 against the ill behavior to Non Kashmiri Indians in Kashmir.
  • In 1957 he was elected to Lok Sabha from Balrampur. His oratory skills gained him popularity and soon he reached the prime position in Jan Sangh. In 1968 he became the national President of Jan Sangh.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee merged the Jan Sangh with the Janta Party in the general elections of 1977 and became Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Morarji Desai.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the first parliamentarian to give a speech in hindi to the United Nations General Assembly.
  • He along with other colleagues, transforned the Jan Sangh into Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) in 1980 and became the first President of BJP.
  • After 1996 general elections, BJP came out as the largest party and he got the opportunity from President Shankar Dayal Sharma to form the government. This government stood for only 13 days as he could not gather the necessary support.
  • After the quick fall of two Janta Dal governments, in the general elections of 1998, he got the opportunity to serve as Prime Misniter for 2nd time. This gov run for 13 months and the gov fell down due to withdrawal of support by AIADMK by lack of just one vote. Lok Sabha was dissolved till fresh elections and A B Vajpayee remained as caretaker PM.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee became PM for third time after general elections of 1999 and this was the first time a Non Congress Party ruled India for full terms of 5 years.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be remembered for Pokhran II Nuclear Tests in May 1998 and Operation Vijay (Kargil War) in June 1999.
