Countries that share Borders with India
In total there are 7 countries that India shares its borders with. In other words it can be said that there are 7 neighbouring countries of India. These countries from east to west are Myanmar, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Afghanistan (only official claim, not on actual grounds) and Pakistan.
List of Indian States that lies on International Border
In general there are total 17 Indian States that are located on the international border. These 17 Indian states shares their boundary with one, two or three countries. These Indian states in order from East to West are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya in north east; Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim in northern planes; Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand in extreme north; Rajasthan and Gujarat in west.

Details of the States forming International Borders with Neighbouring Countries
- Indian States which shares international border with Pakistan – Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir (4 states share their borders with Pakistan)
- Indian States which shares international border with China – Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh (5 states borders with China)
- Indian States which shares international border with Nepal – Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim (5 Indian states shares its border with Nepal)
- Indian states which shares international border with Bhutan – Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh ( 4 states shares border with Bhutan)
- Indian states which shares international border with Bangladesh – West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram (5 Indian states shares border with Bangladesh)
- Indian states which shares international border with Myanmar – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram ( 4 Indian states shares its border with Myanmar)
So by this data we can say that the country which shares its border with maximum number of Indian States is a tie between China, Nepal and Bangladesh each of which shares border with 5 Indian States. In other words the country which touches maximum number of Indian states are China, Nepal and Bangladesh (each touching 5 Indian states).
Indian State with maximum International Borders : 3 Countries
The maximum number of International boundaries shared by any Indian State is three (3 only). In other words there are only maximum three neighbouring countries for some particular Indian States. These states are Sikkim, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh.
- Countries by which Sikkim shares international boundary – Bhutan in east, China in north and Nepal in west.
- Countries by which West Bengal shares international boundary – Bangladesh in east, Nepal in north and Bhutan in northeast.
- Countries by which Arunachal Pradesh shares international boundary – Myanmar in east, China in north and Bhutan in west.
Note – if India’s claim on Gilgit-Baltistan is taken to account then the state of Jammu and Kashmir also shares its border with three countries, these countries are – China in north and east, Afghanistan in northwest and Pakistan in west. But since in reality the actual control over Gilgit Baltistan region is with Pakistan, the shared boundary with Afghanistan is ruled out and hence actual number of shared international boundaries of state Jammu and Kashmir is only two.
Indian State with maximum International Borders : 2 Countries
There are 4 Indian states which shares international boundary with 2 countries. In other words there 4 Indian states which has 2 neighbouring countries. These states east to west are Mizoram and Assam in northeast; Uttarakhand and Jammu Kashmir in north. Mizoram shares international border with Bangladesh and Mayanmar while Assam touches Bangladesh and Bhutan. Uttarakhand shares its border with Nepal and China while Jammu Kashmir shares its border with China and Pakistan.
Indian States which are neighbour to only one Country
There are 10 states which share their international border with only one country. These state from east to west are Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Country that shares longest Border with India
The length of the shared borders in decreasing order with different neighbouring countries of India are as follows –
- Length of India Bangladesh border – 4096 Km
- Length of India China border – 4057 Km
- Length of border shared between India and Pakistan – 3323 Km (including line of control in J & K and international border)
- Length of India Nepal border – 1751 Km
- Length of India Myanmar border – 1643 Km
- Length of India Bhutan border – 699 Km
- Length of border shared between India and Afghanistan – 106 Km (as per India’s claim; the shared border with Afghanistan lies in Gilgit Baltistan which in Pakistan’s control)
From the above data it is clear that the India shares longest border with Bangladesh. India shares second longest border length with China. The country by which India shares least border length is Bhutan (if Afghanistan’s shared border is neglected as it is not in India’s control).
Length of International Border of different States
Following table represents total international border length of Indian states in decreasing order. From this data Jammu and Kashmir has longest international border length of 3176 Km while West Bengal has second longest international border length of 2509.7 Km. Indian state with smallest (least) international border length is Nagaland.
