The article describes all unknown, rare, amazing, educational interesting facts about oceans for kids. Oceans are the enormous continuous bodies of saline water. In comparison to Oceans seas are generally smaller bodies. The region close to the lands where land and oceans meet are called as seas. The Oceans are the major conventional divisions which occupies seven-tenths of Planet’s surface. The oceans and seas together cover 71 % of Earth’s area. The exposed land occupies only 29 % of Earth’s area with mean elevation of 840 m.  Sea is often interchangeably used with oceans but by definition Sea is the saline water body which is partly or fully enclosed by the lands.  There are 5 Oceans on earth which in descending order are – Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Antarctic Ocean and Arctic Ocean. Facts about Ocean : The Pacific

Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean of the world. The original meaning of Pacific ocean is Peaceful sea. The geographical extents of Pacific ocean is marked  by Arctic ocean in the north to Antarctica in south; Asia and Australia in west and North and South America on east. It covers about one third of Earth’s total surface area. The equator divides the ocean into North Pacific and South Pacific ocean. The Mariana Trench in North Pacific is the deepest point of earth which has a depth of about 10,911 m. The Pacific Ocean contains around 25000 different islands, many more than are found in Earth’s other oceans.

Facts about Ocean : Atlantic 

Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean of the world. The Atlantic Ocean’s name refers to Atlas of Greek mythology. It has total surface area of about 10,64,00,000 Sq Km. It covers about 20 % of Earth’s surface area. It is bounded by Europe and Africa in east and North and South America in west. The equator divides this ocean in North Atlantic Ocean and South Atlantic Ocean. It connects Arctic Ocean in north by Denmark Strait, Greenland sea, Norwegian sea. Towards Europe it connects Mediterranean sea by Gibraltar strait. In the southeast Atlantic Ocean merges with Indian Ocean. In southwest it connects with Pacific Ocean. In west it meets Gulf of Mexico and through Panama Canal it connects to Pacific sea. The mysterious Bermuda Triangle is located in the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia Earhart became the first female to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932.

Facts about Indian Ocean

Indian ocean is the third largest ocean of the world. It is bounded by Asia in north, Africa on west, Australia in east and Antarctica in south. The island oceans located in Indian Ocean are – Madagascar, Bahrin, Comoros, Maldives, Mauritus, Seychelles and Sri Lanka. The archipelago of Indonesia and Island nations of East Timor border the Indian Ocean at east. It is also called as Youngest Ocean of the world. The Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean.The temperature of surface water sometimes touches 36 degrees.

Facts about Antarctic Ocean

This ocean is also called as Southern ocean. It is the fourth largest oceans of the world. This ocean is mainly the region which covers Antarctica continent.  Roald Amundsen was the first person to reach the South Pole.

Facts about Arctic Ocean

It is located mainly around the North Pole region.  It is the smallest and shallowest of all the oceans of world. Some of the oceanographers do not recognize it as ocean and simply call it Arctic Sea. This ocean is almost surrounded by Asia, Europe and North America.  It is partly covered by sea ice throughout the year. Its salinity is the lowest of all Oceans.

  • Atlantic Ocean – Baltic Sea, Mediterranean sea, Black Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, North Sea.
  • Arctic Ocean -Amundsen Gulf, East Siberian sea, Greenland Sea, White Sea
  • Indian Ocean – Andaman sea, Bay of Bengal, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea
  • Pacific Ocean – Bering Sea, Bohai Sea, Chilean Sea, East China Sea, Philippine sea, Sea of Japan, Yellow Sea
  • Antarctic Ocean – Amundsen Sea, Cooperation Sea, Davis sea, Gulf St Vincent, Ross Sea, Scotia Sea
  • Land Locked Sea – Aral Sea, Caspian Sea, Dead Sea, Salton Sea
