I knew most of the basic rules for the major American team sports (or thought I did). But it just occurred to me a minute ago that all the years I’ve been casually watching professional or college sports (say, at my in-laws’ house or a sportsbar restaurant), surprisingly, it never crossed my mind to actually count the number of players on the field/court/pool/&c. and commit it to memory. It seems I MUST have known these ridiculously elementary facts at one time in my school days’ intramural sports participation, but that was many moons ago and before I got interested in the more serious contests of life.
